Our office won this competition for two clusters of 150 homes on an estate behind the dunes of Noordwijk, where people with and without a mental handicap will live closely together. Various housing typologies are combined into a relaxed and balanced composition of harmonious yet unique buildings. With the 'Rocky Lumps' by artist Tom Claassen as an urban reference, the neigbourhood is designed in two coherent clusters, with space & freedom for both individuality and interaction. To do justice to the designation of Park Dwellings, the car parks are hidden away so that the dwellings directly border the park on one side and intimate public domain, the pedestrian meeting area of the neighborhood, reaches the front door on the other side. The work of local handicapped artists is integrated in architectural details.
